When should I seek counseling?
If you find yourself wondering if you should seek counseling, take the first step. Asking for help is a sign maturity, not weakness. When you are in physical pain, you go to the doctor to find out what is causing it. Emotional discomfort deserves equal attention.
What can I expect during our first meeting?
Our first meeting will be an initial consultation in which information is gathered to understand the issues you are facing, your current concerns and your history and to consider a plan of action for dealing with those issues. At the conclusion of the meeting I will answer any questions you have and we will discuss how to proceed with treatment.
How does counseling proceed after the first time?
The process continues by the individual telling his or her "story". My job is to listen and attempt to begin to understand the way the person thinks, feels, and acts. The individual decides what he or she wishes to change and what patterns of thinking or acting are preventing that from happening. By exploring possible alternative ways of responding to a situation, the individual is able to set realistic goals and develop strategies for achieving them.
Is counseling confidential?
I follow professional code of conduct standards and state guidelines regarding privacy. All information is held in the strictest confidence. No information is released without your written permission, except under emergency situations involving danger to oneself or others.
